WATER BUDGET STUDY

Vancouver Island Waterfall

EDITORS NOTE; If you use the link below, you wil get to the 220 page report which is full of information. We have much to worry about! You will see it all when you look at the vulnerability of many of our aquifers.
Another question that will be asked of Director Veenhof, if the study is not to control land use…why was the study done??? In addition, he needs to also be asked why he would comment on his area only and not the entire Regional District when the results are NOT good.

This below is from Director Veenhof with my comments in between;

For some time now, the Regional District of Nanaimo has been developing a water budget study. This is to look at our various aquifers and analyze if water going into the aquifers is less than or greater than what is going out, (like your bank account balance). A conceptual study was released recently and can be found on the RDN web site at;

http://rdn.bc.ca/events/attachments/evID6475evattID1619.pdf

It is the first step in developing a water budget model for the Regional District of Nanaimo. The report looks at the region broadly, and is, "not designed to be used for quantitative land use and
design". This said, the report suggests that all the aquifers in our area (Area H) are under low or low to moderate stress with the following exceptions:
Aquifer 421 (bounded by Thames and Nile Creek) which is assessed at high-very high risk, and
Aquifer 661 (within less than 1 km of Spider Lake), which is assessed at moderate risk.

(EDITORS COMMENTS' There are NINE aquifers showing at high to very high risk, ELEVEN aquifers showing at moderate to high risk, SIX at Moderate risk and only 16 at Low to Moderate risk. My count is 26 at moderate to very high risk and ONLY `16 at low risk.)

Again, this is conceptual data and this information should not be used to determine land use. I will let you know when the report is available locally.
