SAVE OUR VALLEY ALLIANCE
Our Goal
To affect legislation to protect all of BC’s watersheds by promoting accountable sustainable forestry.
SOVA
is an Alberni Valley alliance that invites participation from volunteer organizations, individual citizens, all levels of government, First Nations, labour groups, and the business sector. We are all concerned and outraged by the impact of current logging practices and lack of government regulations on our Valley’s water, forests, and economy.
WATER THREAT
If you live in the Alberni Valley:
your water is not protected adequately by current government regulations or by current corporate logging practices:
A Healthy Forest Is a Healthy Watershed.
KARST
What is Karst and why is it important?
Karst is a type of terrain created by groundwater dissolving sedimentary rock such as limestone.
Karst regions contain aquifers that are capable of providing large supplies of water.
In the Alberni Valley between 50 – 60 domestic and commercial licensed water holders as well as some of Cherry Creek, Beaver Creek, and Beaufort Regional areas obtain their water from karst aquifers.
Current non-sustainable logging practices are not protecting one of our most important resource features: Karst Aquifers.
BIODIVERSITY
With unsustainable logging practices we will lose salmon indicator streams such as Cherry Creek. Fry and eggs are at risk, due to increased siltation, changes in water temperature, quality, and quantity.
Valley residents have worked for 25 years rebuilding these streams to world class status and they are being damaged, affecting our food, the sports & commercial fishing industry and everyone who lives in the Alberni Valley. Our local loggers will log sustainably. Let’s give them that chance.
