For years, the Council of Canadians has been calling for a federal agency with a mandate to update Canada’s water policies and coordinate water management and protection efforts. The creation of the Canada Water Agency is much needed, and right now we have an opportunity to provide input into its mandate.
In the 2019 federal election, the Liberals committed to establishing the Canada Water Agency with a promise it would “keep our water safe, clean and well-managed.” Since the election, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change and the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food have been tasked with creating the agency and MP Terry Duguid of Winnipeg South is overseeing it.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has released an online consultation platform to invite input into the mandate of the Canada Water Agency. We encourage all Council of Canadians supporters to provide feedback. You can either visit the online platform PlaceSpeak, create an account and participate in the forum discussion, or you can email your submission directly to ec.water-eau.eccanada.ca on our website.
Communities and individuals have until May 31, 2021, to provide input.
