Strathcona Regional District Resolution to Stop Approving Licences for bottling and sale of groundwater

Hi everyone. We just got home from the Strathcona Regional District Board (SRD) meeting where I made a presentation to the Board, and then the Board subsequently approved a resolution to be presented to the Association of Vancouver Island Coastal Communities (AVICC) and then ultimately to the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM). The resolution is as follows:

"WHEREAS water is an essential resource upon which all life, including all ecosystems and all local communities depend and

WHEREAS water is a public heritage and a public trust for present and future generations and access to water must not be compromised by commercial operations relating to commercial water bottling or commercial bulk water exports,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Premier of British Columbia and the Minister of Forests, Lands,Natural Resources and Rural Development be requested to immediately cease the licensing and extraction of groundwater for commercial water bottling and/or bulk water exports from aquifers."

This is fabulous news, as we now officially have a Regional District driving the change we want.

I have 2 requests of you:

1. Please send an email or letter to the Strathcona Regional District Board thanking them for passing this resolution and for taking the lead on moving this forward. (one email that will be distributed within the SRD) administrationsrd.ca

2. Please send an email to your own Municipality, City or Regional District asking them to support the SRD resolution when it comes up for a vote at the AVICC. Please share this request with your friends, family and connections all over the Island.
