Duncan residents are under a boil-water advisory after a sewer main leak prompted officials to turn off one of the city’s wells.

There is no confirmed contamination in the water distribution system after a recent sewer main break near McAdam Park caused untreated wastewater to leak, the municipality said.

“Although not in the immediate vicinity of the leak, one of the city’s wells has been turned off as a safeguard while further testing is ongoing,” Duncan said in an advisory to residents.

The city said it consulted with Island Health on a precautionary advisory for all residents and businesses connected to the water distribution system. Water users are advised to boil all tap water for at least one minute before drinking, cooking or brushing teeth.

The other city wells are still active.

The advisory will remain until testing has been completed, according to the city.

Island Health said under a boil-water advisory, the public should also boil water for making fruit juices and baby formulas, washing raw fruit and vegetables, giving water to pets and making ice.
