20th April 2011
Earth Day is Every Day
This Earth Day, the Vancouver Island Water Watch Coalition renews it's commitment to actively promote the protection of community water/waste water systems, community watersheds and the environment from which this precious resource originates.
Earth Day is a name used for two different observances, both held worldwide annually. While some people celebrate Earth Day around the time of the vernal equinox, others observe the occasion on April 22 each year. Earth Day aims to inspire awareness of and appreciation for earth's environment. It is currently observed in more than 140 countries around the world.
The April 22 Earth Day, founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson, was first organized in 1970 to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet as well as to encourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water and soil pollution.
Earth Day serves to increase awareness of important environmental quality issues including sustainable development, water resources, energy, recycling and waste reduction, green economy, conservation and biodiversity, and environmental education.
This Earth Day, the Vancouver Island Water Watch Coalition renews its commitment to water as a human right which must not be sold as a commodity. We recognize that water is not only for human consumption but it sustains all life and we as citizens must guard against those who would use profit as a means to control our water, environment and our communities. Ownership and control of water/waste water is for the commons and the common good and, as such, must be kept within the public domain and protected by all of us in order to ensure continued sustainability of our communities, environment and all life. Anything less and we will have failed the generations which follow us.
Join the VI Water Watch Coalition this Earth Day and every day in keeping water clean, safe, affordable, accessible to all and public.
