Council of Canadians

Sign the petition opposing the sale of public water services to private companies
Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Care2 reports that, “Days ago, at a meeting of the World Social Forum in Dakar, the Senegalese capital, Bolivian President Evo Morales called on the organizations present as well as African leaders to block the sale of water services to private companies.”

The Council of Canadians highlighted this at http://www.canadians.org/campaignblog/?p=6345 and http://www.canadians.org/campaignblog/?p=6300.

A water justice statement, signed by the Council of Canadians and the Blue Planet Project, states, “From Cochabamba, Bolivia to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, to Marseille, France, private water companies have deprived people of their human right to water in the name of profit. We oppose the dominant economic model that prescribes privatization, commercialization and corporatization of public water and sanitation services. We will counter this type of destructive and non-participatory public sector reform, having seen the outcomes for poor people as a result of rigid cost-recovery practices and the use of prepaid meters.”

Almost 1,500 people have now signed the petition supporting this and opposing the sale of public water service to private companies. The signatories include people from the Russian Federation, Portugal, Austria, Italy, France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Australia, Turkey, South Africa, Israel, and many other countries.
