As neighbors of the Halalt and also tapped into the Chemainus River Aquifer, I am aware of and sympathetic to the issues. Halalt are standing up for all in protecting a precious resource. There should be a Watershed Basin Mgmt Plan before major tapping into the aquifer. Current provincial and local governments are responsible for the reckless logging practices that have spoiled Chemainus’ current water source. More “hands on the tap” are obviously required this time. I have today spoken with Tyler George, Halalt First Nation Councillor and on the front of the blockade. As you can read from many comments to news, there is a lot of anger from those inconvenienced and/or ignorant. This has been a passionate local issue for years and is boiling over now.
