Should the Coal stay in the ground?

Critical Community Meeting

Tuesday November 24

7:15 at the Fanny Bay Community Hall

Are you aware that there is a massive coal mining project planned in the Beaufort Mountain Range behind Fanny Bay / Ship’s Point in the

Tsable River / Cowie Creek Watersheds???

Check out http://www.coalwatch.ca/ for detailed information about the project

The Compliance Energy Raven Underground Coal Project http://www.complianceenergy.com/projects/raven_coal/index.shtml

ß Plans to mine 2.2 million tonnes of coal per year over a 20 year period
(total of 44 million tonnes)

ß 1/3 of the mined material will be waste = 700,000 tonnes or 700,00 cubic metres per year for 20 years = 140 million tonnes to be stored in
surface “reclaimed stockpiles and slurry ponds”

ß 50-70 truckloads per day (or one trainload) of coal heading to unknown destinations in Asia

ß also unknown at this time is where the coal will leave from on
Vancouver Island (Duke Point / Port Alberni / Texada / Brown’s Bay ???)

ß The first stage of the project will encompass 7660 acres (3100 h) of underground mines

Questions the Comox Valley Water Coalition have are:

ü What effect will this project have on the wells and water supply in the Fanny Bay / Ships Point Water District.

ü What impact will the mine have on our “ancient aquifers” as they drill deep into the ground

ü Where is the water coming from to wash the coal and how much per tonne do they need to wash and clean the coal

ü Where and how do they intend to store the toxic tailings after the washing – and protect against the potential of natural disasters such as earthquakes.

WHAT QUESTIONS DO YOU HAVE???????

If you cannot come to the meeting at Fanny Bay but want to stay informed or even more importantly want to be involved please email: infocoalwatch.ca
