Fresh water for 12,000 people is being destroyed in Shawnigan Lake, BC Canada

Petitioning: Christie Clark, Premier of BC and Mary Polak, BC Minister of the Environment

The people of British Columbia ask for immediate help to stop the destruction of Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island.

Why this is important:

This permit has been granted by the BC Ministry of Environment without an independent environmental assessment. Active Earth, the engineering company that submitted the data for the permit, owns a large interest in the project, which constitutes a clear conflict of interest.

This lake supplies drinking water and recreation for 12,000 residents in this community. A permit granted to South Island Aggregates (SIA), allows the dumping of 100,000 tons of toxic soil per year, for 50 years, in a high elevation quarry above the Shawnigan Lake water shed.

Contaminated water from the site has breached containment systems that were never properly designed or certified as safe or environmentally compliant. Toxic sediment and water is being introduced into Shawnigan Lake at a rapid rate. The heavy rains have exacerbated the situation and yet the BC Environment Ministry remains indifferent to the destruction of that which it has a mandate to protect.

Millions of Canadians depend on the protection of our water systems for their very survival. But how can anyone have support for a government that refuses to protect and is complicit in the destruction of drinking water for thousands of people? The BC Environment Minister has failed to protect our environment, ignored its mandate, denied us representation and has turned a deaf ear to the pleas of the people to defend our right for safe drinking water.

Decisive action is essential to protect the environment before it is ever compromised. Christie Clark and Mary Polak, we demand that you both use your authority to revoke this permit, institute the independent collection of environmental and riparian data using credible science to responsibly assess this situation, force SIA to cease operations, cleanup their site and stop the irreversible destruction of Shawnigan Lake.
