From the Council of Canadians;
Our Ontario-Quebec organizer Stuart Trew writes tonight that, "Toronto voted this evening to ban bottled water from civic centres immediately, phase it out of all municipal buildings by 2011, and commit to improve access to public water in all its facilities!"
He adds, "Nestle, Refreshments Canada, the Canadian Bottled Water Association and the lobbyists were out in force but failed to sway councillors against the vote. One typical last-minute motion to 'explore' a new recycling program paid for by the bottlers was rejected by a larger margin than any of us would have imagined. It was incredible."
He concludes, "Watching City Council work over the last two full days was very interesting and informative. Watching the lobbyists was horrifying and educational too. This is a bad day for bottled water and a big day for public water in Canada and the world!"
